DIY Brake upgrade

Post by rickycyng on Sat Jan 10, 2009 10:31 am

hello everyone. my names ricky and im new to this forum. i just bought a 2nd hand gti last month and the brakes need to be replaced. i thought taking it to mechanics would b realli expensive and u never know if they do a good job so i decided to DIY. ive been looking around @ rotors n i found some rotors have two other holes aside of the stud holes (OMP GrN) whereas some other rotors like EBC only contain the four stud holes.
what are those other two holes exactly? i was told they are for mounting the rotors to the hub? does that mean the rotors without these holes are no good? i also need to make sure i buy the right rotors lol and theres a billion sizes out there hahaha. can anyone please tell me the rotor sizes for the 2002 built gti rallye?
thanks heaps

those two extra holes are for mounting the disc to the hub. but if you get them without, its not such a big deal. most of the time the pictures you see of brake discs are just an example, so if you buy a vehicle specific part, you should get it to suit the original design. my ebc's came with the 2 extra holes. you will need 266mm vented discs at the front, and 247mm solid at the rear. shop on ebay uk, plenty of options there.

on my dead body if we are turning in to 206info!

he's asking a question, meaning, you tell him an answer or direct advice...

Sorry, i think Pugl3t and I don't like the idea of telling someone to just go search it, this is what a forum is for Smile so you don't have to.

By the way - Welcome Ricky! Be sure to create a profile in the profile section!

cheers

they changed the calipers from 2002 onwards

http://206gti.net/Peugeot-206GTi-Discs-&-Pads.pdf

this pdf should tell u what to buy, just double check with the actual pads in your car

so what did u end up getting or going to get? and how much is it costing u?

oh thanks heaps. juz had a look n i think ill no wot exactly i need now.
i was thinking bout getting a set of mintex from ebay. but den most of them either dun ship 2 australia or dey juz didnt reply me =.= n i read up sum chinese forums n dey said deyr not so great.
den 1 of my fds told me bout rda n dey distribute ebc as well. i contacted them and was thinking bout getting a set of rda rear solids and slotted fronts. but den dat fd who recommended me 2 rda said dun bother slotting cos it ruins the discs structure. juz the 4 discs would cost around 500.
now pads....i was thinking bout using the rda pads but wen i went n asked....dey told me rda doesnt make pads o.0 but der website said dey do?! hmm also considering greenstuffs but im kinda worried bout da squeal and dust dey produced. n finally ferodo wich every1 seems 2 favour. i got a quote on the front and rear pads would cost around 180.
any suggestions? if i go 4 da sets of rda discs and ferodo pads it should cost around 700-800 n den getting ppl 2 put em on....prob another 200 on labour? so i guess 1k all up ><"

that price sounds about right,

wen i got my discs, the shipping costed almost the same as the discs, even with that it still worked out cheaper than buying inside australia, and also when u get parts here for ur pug people tend to give u that attitude

if the pads ur getting are DS2500 formula, then for $180 (Aus dollars right?) then their realy cheap,

i had my rear discs and pad replaced recently. using stock parts cost $59 per disc and $40 per pad, + $80 labour. so i guess $700 for slotted rotors and upgraded pads is pretty good.

$40 per pad? or $40 per side for pads? $160 seems steep for stock pads...
my ebc fronts with green stuff, and ferodo pads only rear cost me a little over 600 landed from uk.
